World’s most famous ‘sound designer’ put behind bars

Brice Carrington… Ahh, the irony, the irony! As Randy Thom, sound designer of movies such as Apocalypse Now and Ratatouille once said:

“The Brice Carrington phenomenon is like a character in an Altman movie
if he had made one about the strange, anonymous, nerdy, sound
design underclass in film. Beautifully ironic that the guy who gets
more press attention than anyone else is a fraudulent nutcase who’s
probably never worked on a film in his life.

Ok, you screenwriters out there… go to work!”

Brice Carrington is well known, or should I say infamous, in the sound industry for being the biggest liar of all time. He claimed to be the sound designer on almost every Hollywood blockbuster title imaginable, including Jurassic Park, Spiderman, King Kong, The Fantastic Four, Miami Vice, The Incredible Hulk… and the list goes on and on.

Also, he claimed he was a 3-times Oscar winner.

The catch is, he never made a single sound for any of those movies, let alone won an Oscar. Moreover so, no one knows if he ever actually made any sound at all.

Interviews with him are full of hilarious claims, one of the funniest being that he mixes in lion roars in any sound he designs.

Because of all these false claims, he had obviously lost all credibility that he might once have had. Still, there were apparently some people left who believed his stories, as he recently pleaded guilty to charges that he defrauded investors out of more than $4 million.

An article on ktvu.com reads:

“In pleading guilty, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Carrington admitted that he lured investors by telling them that he was well-established in the entertainment industry and had been involved in many Hollywood productions.

To add credibility to his claims, Carrington paid a jeweler to make an Oscar statuette and also had another fake statuette, according to prosecutors.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said Carrington displayed the fake Oscar statuettes and photographs of himself with the statuettes in his home during investor fund raising parties

In addition, Carrington used investors’ money without their knowledge to buy three luxury cars — a Lamborghini Murcielago, a Hummer H2 and a Mercedes SL 500R – and used them as props to help lure new investors into investing money with him, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, Carrington received about $4,042,480 from investors but used no more than $430,000 of those funds toward designing sound effects.

Carrington also admitted that he failed to report $581,500 in gross receipts on his 2003 tax return and instead filed a false Form 1040 reporting zero taxes owed, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.”

LOL! He used 400.000 dollars out of a 4 million investment for work, and the rest went into buying fancy cars! You have to give this guy some credit….

Well, he’s put behind bars for 4 years now, so I guess we won’t hear much from him anymore for the time being, although a couple of jokers, like this one and that one, have created Brice Carrington Twitter accounts since he was convicted.
