Archival Sound Recordings (ASR) is the result of a development project to increase access to the British Library Sound Archive’s extensive collections.
Most of you probably know about the similar yet quite different Internet Archive (IA), an American endeavor that sets out to document as much audio, video text and even websites (via the waybackmachine) as possible. Big distinction between the two is that ASR is a strictly curated archive, where the IA is much less moderated.
When you think about it, almost every country could digitize their archives, for the world to see. One might almost get philosophical about the possibilities the Internet offers, to change the way we make music. What impact would listening to the complete collection of West African Decca Records have on a boy from New Zealand? Here at Humanworkshop we greatly appreciate and value archives with recordings from around the world, for obvious reasons.
